Work Package 1

University of Jyväskylä

Technological Transformation, Migration, and the Reshaping of Work Today

In Work Package 1, the University of Jyväskylä investigates where technological disruption meets migration and working life transformation. WP1 examines how algorithmic management, AI, automation, and robotization are reshaping labour processes, employment relations, and the meaning of skills in two migrant-dense and rapidly changing sectors: care and on-demand transport.

We ask how and why employers implement AI and automated systems, how these changes reconfigure migrant workers’ everyday professional lives, how foundational concepts such as employment, work, skills, deservingness, and DEI are being redefined, and what these shifts mean for attraction, retention, and long-term integration in Finland. Using a longitudinal mixed-methods design (2025–2031), WP1 combines historical policy mapping, multi-wave employer and worker surveys, extensive multi-stakeholder interviews, and participatory ethnographic research where migrant workers act as co-researchers documenting real-time work experiences.

Throughout, WP1 foregrounds gendered, racialized, and class-based impacts of technological change and embeds ethical AI, equity, and social dialogue principles into both research design and practical outputs. The results feed into AI-readiness and fairness toolkits, policy briefs, comparative case studies, public engagement initiatives, and academic publications, advancing TAIMI’s systemic mission to ensure that digital transformation strengthens, rather than fragments, inclusive and sustainable working life in Finland.
