TAIMI
Technological Transformation, AI and Migrant Skills in the Finnish Labour Market
TAIMI is a multidisciplinary research project examining how digitalisation, artificial intelligence (AI), and changing forms of work are reshaping skills, inclusion, and working life in Finland. As labour shortages grow and workplaces become more technologically mediated, migrant workers play an increasingly central role across key sectors. TAIMI investigates how technological transformation can support fair, inclusive, and sustainable labour markets, rather than deepen inequality or skill underutilisation.

About the Project
Finland faces a dual challenge: persistent labour shortages in critical sectors and the underutilization of migrant skills. At the same time, AI, automation, and digital platforms are transforming how work is organized, how skills are valued, and how careers develop. While migrant workers are essential to addressing these challenges, existing policies and workplace practices often fail to support long-term integration, inclusion, and retention.
TAIMI addresses this gap by studying how technological change, migration, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) intersect in Finnish working life. The project combines research excellence with strong societal engagement to produce knowledge, tools, and policy recommendations that help employers, policymakers, and workers navigate digital transformation in an inclusive way.
Research Focus
TAIMI explores how AI and digitalization affect work, skills, and inclusion across individual, organizational, sectoral, and societal levels. The project asks:
- How are AI, automation, and digital systems reshaping work processes and skill demands?
- How do migrant workers experience technological change, inclusion, and career development?
- How can DEI be developed as a concrete, learnable skill in workplaces and institutions?
- How can AI be designed and governed to support fairness, well-being, and social sustainability?
To answer these questions, TAIMI focuses on sectors where labour shortages and technological change are most pronounced: care, IT, manufacturing, and on-demand transport.
