TAIMI Research Integrated into Policy Simulation Teaching at the University of Jyväskylä
We are pleased to share a teaching activity connected to WP1 at the University of Jyväskylä as part of the TAIMI project.
In the advanced-level courses YKPS3012 Processes in Social and Public Policy: Lectures and YKPS3013 Processes in Social and Public Policy: Exercises, students engage in a collective bargaining simulation in the care sector that is directly informed by TAIMI research.
The course structure combines theoretical perspectives on institutions, political processes, and policy dynamics with a practical simulation exercise in which students take on different roles, negotiate, and make decisions in complex real-world scenarios.
Through this approach, students do not only study public policy processes theoretically, but also experience the challenges and dynamics involved in negotiation, decision-making, and collaboration. The courses support the development of practical skills such as teamwork, negotiation, critical thinking, and the application of academic knowledge in realistic policy environments.
Simulation-based teaching also helps bridge research and education by making the social, economic, and political dimensions of collective agreements and policymaking more tangible and accessible for students.
At TAIMI, we are proud to contribute to innovative and research-based teaching methods that prepare students for complex real-world challenges and support deeper understanding of working life and public policy processes.
The courses are coordinated by Nathan Lillie, Quivine Ndomo, and Sarah Tornberg.
