New Publication by TAIMI Researchers Explores Responsible Language Use in International Business:
TAIMI researchers Hilla Back and Rebecca Piekkari, together with Annelise Ly, have published a new chapter titled “From Controlling to Caring: Language-Sensitive Research in International Business.”
The publication examines the evolving role of language in multinational and multilingual organizations, highlighting a significant shift in international business research: from viewing language primarily as a tool for corporate control toward understanding language as a matter of care, inclusion, and responsibility.
Traditionally, language-sensitive research in international business has focused on functionalist perspectives, where language is treated as an instrument to manage efficiency and coordination in organizations. In this new work, the authors argue that alternative approaches are emerging that emphasize ethical considerations, linguistic justice, and inclusive communication practices.
The chapter introduces the concept of responsible language use, defined as communication that is inherently inclusive, multilingual, and attentive to diverse voices and perspectives. The authors stress the importance of moving beyond control-oriented approaches toward practices that foster participation, equality, and care in increasingly diverse workplaces.
The publication identifies four promising directions for future research:
- Language and migrants
- Language and equality, diversity, and inclusion
- Language and technology
- Language and research methodology
Through these themes, the chapter explores how language shapes belonging, participation, and power in organizations and society more broadly.
The work contributes important insights into responsible organizational communication and opens new avenues for research on multilingualism, inclusion, and ethics in international business contexts.
