Steps Towards Meta-Theoretical Foundations for Resilient Human-AI Transformation in Industrial Systems
As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industrial operations, an important question emerges: how can industries adopt AI without compromising human expertise, transparency, and operational resilience?
TAIMI Researcher Bastian Tammentie, together with Vivek Kant from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, explores this challenge in their latest work, “Steps towards meta-theoretical foundations for resilient human-AI transformation in industrial systems.”
The study examines how AI systems can be designed not merely for automation, but for sustainable and resilient human-AI collaboration in industrial environments. While AI adoption in high-tech sectors often prioritizes efficiency and optimization, industrial systems face additional demands related to process reliability, quality control, worker safety, and long-term skill preservation.
Using a case example from the glass tempering industry, the researchers demonstrate how different approaches to AI transparency and task allocation can significantly influence operator agency, trust, and resilience. The work challenges the common “black box” implementation model of AI by proposing an alternative vision: resilient AI systems that keep human operators meaningfully engaged and capable of diagnosing problems when automated systems fail.
The article emphasizes that preserving human understanding and decision-making capacity is critical for maintaining resilient industrial operations. Rather than replacing workers, AI should support human expertise through explainable and adaptable system design.
Based on the presented theoretical foundations and industrial example, the authors outline actionable design considerations for researchers, system developers, and decision-makers seeking to implement human-centred AI solutions across evolving industrial contexts.
